
Matthew Innes is Deputy Vice Chancellor at Birkbeck, University of London, where he is also Professor of History. He grew up in a former mill and mining community in West Yorkshire, before becoming a lecturer at Cambridge, Birmingham and York, and then moving to Birkbeck, the University of London college founded to serve working people. He is passionate about ensuring educational opportunities are open to all, and believes that education is the key to social mobility and personal development. Outside work, he is a proud dad to 21 year old twins, and loves cricket and music.
