Morley students centre stage: Awards ceremonies celebrate students’ talent and determination
…
Lambeth Adult Learning, the community learning programme delivered by Lambeth Council, recently held their end-of-year conference in which they celebrated their local adult learners, staff and partner institutions. As part of the conference, a number of awards were handed out, and we were delighted to hear that our tutor Maureen Watson, who teaches ICT and First Steps to Reception and Administration, was named one of the Most Inspiring Tutors at the awards.
According to Lambeth Adult Learning, Maureen was nominated because she is “a remarkable tutor who gets the best out of her learners. She has a kind and imaginative approach to learners along with a seemingly inexhaustible reserve of patience.”
And we didn’t just receive an award at the conference – we also nominated a group who were named Outstanding Group of the Year. The ESOL for Active Citizenship group at Granton Primary School were honoured for the incredible progress they had made over the year, overcoming a number of barriers including a mixture of nationalities, social isolation, and limited education as children.
The group bonded well and are now more confident in their English abilities, feeling able to read to their children and becoming regular library users, including the Morley library. Two of the group members have started volunteering at Granton Primary School and the others also plan to eventually find work in childcare, as a teaching assistant, in an office, or as a sales assistant.
Morley tutor Lois Davies said of the group, “The group have been an inspiration at the school and within the college, and we expect to see great things from all of them in the future!”
Congratulations to everyone who received awards at the conference. To find out more about our Learning in the Community opportunities, click here.
