Penny Lecture: When I am Laid in Earth with Simon Norfolk

Welcome to this Penny Lecture, curated by Morley College London…London’s largest institute of adult learning, with sites both north and south of the river.

Penny Lectures were founded by the founder of the college, Emma Cons and first delivered at the Old Vic in September 1882 – so last year we marked 140 years of lectures! – beginning with “The Telephone or how to talk to a man a hundred miles away”…also ‘Why is the Sea Salty?’, ‘Curiosities of Insect Life’ and ‘Microscopic wonders of the sea.’

Join us for a Penny Lecture in partnership with the AoP, part of the Starting Out 2023 photographer talks series. Simon Norfolk a landscape photographer whose work over twenty years has been themed around a probing and stretching of the meaning of the word ‘battlefield’ in all its forms. As such, he has photographed in some of the world’s worst war-zones and refugees crises, but is equally at home photographing supercomputers used to design military systems or the test-launching of nuclear missiles. Time’s layeredness in the landscape is an ongoing fascination of his.

With his focus turned to the environment in his recent work, When I am Laid in Earth, Simon will be talking about climate crisis and environmental photography in his practice.
