Penny Lecture: Inspired by the Restless City with Kate Wilson

South London artist and educator Kate Wilson dives into the amazing world that is urban landscape and complements this Penny lecture with her solo exhibition in the Morley Gallery “Total Rubbish”. Kate will speak about how she finds inspiration in the city – from looking at and interacting with urban spaces and objects, natural and man-made. She will explore how we can all be creatively inspired by the urban landscapes around us.

Speaker’s Biography

Kate Wilson was born in Loughborough in 1965 and first started painting London when she came to study her postgraduate at the Royal Academy Schools.  She has a long career as an artist and educator and is a former head of painting, drawing and art history at Morley. Kate is the author of the highly- rated artist textbook Drawing and Painting – Materials and Techniques for Contemporary Artists published by Thames and Hudson.  

Kate paints the familiar objects of her daily landscape and currently pays particular attention to things that are overlooked, thrown away or abandoned. Her painting “Plastic” was shortlisted for the Jackson’s Painting Prize in 2022 and Pick it Up 1 was awarded the Ragnild Hollingsworth prize for Oil Painting at the  RA Summer Exhibition in 2023.  “Throw Away” won a Parker Harris Prize at the Well’s Contemporary 23 .
