What you will learn

Artists need to produce statements for exhibitions, publicity material and websites, however, many people struggle to write them. A good artist’s statement provides the audience (potential collectors and critics) with an entry point into the artist’s work, stimulating curiosity about their art and an insight into the artist. Join this friendly workshop run by award-winning writer and curator Colin Pink and come away with a completed artist statement suitable for exhibitions, applications to higher education, publicity material and/or websites.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Evaluate what works well and what works less well in a range of different artists’ statements
Understand how to use some key writing techniques to give your statement impact and persuasive power
Come away with a draft of your artist’s statement

Class format and activities

This is a very practical, hands-on workshop designed to make it easy for you to write an effective statement about your artistic practice. We will look at real examples of artists’ statements and discuss their purpose and what works well. We will look at a variety of simple but powerful writing techniques that you can use to make your statement memorable and give it persuasive power and use a group visualization to free up some new ideas about your art practice and what it means to you. While writing your statement the tutor will be available to provide one to one coaching. Finally, we will celebrate our writing achievement and share what we have produced.

A need to produce some kind of statement about your work for example for an exhibition or to apply to university.

What you need to know before you enrol

A smart phone will be useful for photographing and sharing finished work. This is a practical writing workshop designed to help you produce an effective statement about your work.
