We will look at the background to the Debates in the 1970s; explore seminal works such as Linda Nochlin’s Why have there Been No Great Women Artists? then look at the response of women artists to 20th century feminist debates. You will learn about the aesthetics and strategies deployed by key feminist artists to support the fight for gender equality and challenge patriarchal norms. Artists will include Marie Yates, Margaret Harrison, Kay Hunt, Mary Kelly, Alexis Hunter, Helen Chadwick, Mona Hatoum, Rose Finn-Kelcey, Rosy Martin, Jo Spence. We will then look at the intersection of difference; artists will include: Brenda Agard, Sonia Boyce, Jennifer Comrie, Lubaina Himid, Cherry Lawrence, and Maud Sulter.
You will learn through power point presentations, videos, student research, group activities discussions and debates. Some homework will set to share in class. To ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
