Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Have a greater understanding of ensemble singing
  • Develop ensemble rehearsal technique
  • Build an awareness of how your vocal line fits into a larger work
  • Demonstrate knowledge of issues such as tempo, dynamics, articulation and their impact on ensemble performance
  • Improve ability to sustain own vocal line in an ensemble

Class format and activities

You will be singing with your peers, rehearsing your repertoire and being coached on ensemble, style and communication. You will be listening to colleagues’ performances and engaging in class discussion.

Entry requirements

This is a class for advanced students with at least four years of classical singing tuition. You need to be able to hold your line in an ensemble, have a good sense of timing and follow a music score. Entry to the course is via audition to the tutor and accompanist. Auditions for the autumn term will be held on the evening of 12 September. Please contact enquiries@morleycollege.ac.uk to enquire about an audition.

What you need to know before you enrol

You will need to bring a piece of solo repertoire to perform in week one to enable the tutor to allocate an ensemble to you. From week two you will engage in group work on the ensemble you’ve been given. You may bring music for any duet, trio or quartet you’d like to work on.

What you need

You will need to bring copies of any ensemble you are working on and any preferred equipment for taking notes e.g. a recording device, notebook and pen.

What you can do next

You can enrol on other courses for more advanced students such as Solo Singing Intermediate to Advanced, Solo Singing Advanced or one of the singing masterclasses in Lieder, French Song or Oratorio. If you wish to continue working on ensembles you may like to audition for the Morley Opera Course.
