What you will learn

If you want some help getting started on ukulele come along to this beginners class and learn some basic chords, strumming patterns and melody playing. An ideal springboard to get you up to speed to join our Ukulele group.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand your ukulele, learn to tune it
  • Hold the ukulele correctly with good posture
  • Play simple chords in simple songs
  • Play some fundamental strumming patterns
  • Understand some forms of music notation

Class format and activities

Listening to and observing tutor demonstration and explanation. Singing and playing a variety of songs, learning different accompaniment styles. Playing melody together while others play the accompaniment. Playing arrangements. Sometimes on the day you will be asked to play something you have not done before. There will always be something simple you can do. You can choose to a certain extent the level of challenge you want to try. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course makes no unusual demands, the ukulele may be played sitting or standing. You may be asked to look at sheets of songs and TAB on a music stand so you will need to be able to read in those conditions. Please make us aware at the outset if you require additional support regarding your learning needs so we can do our best to accommodate.

What you need

*We have a small number of ukuleles to borrow during classtime, but your own uke will be required for practice at home* A ukulele (soprano, concert, tenor or baritone). Ukulele banjos are also OK if you have one. You will also need tuner, Pen/pencil and notebook. All other materials will be supplied by the tutor.

What you can do next

This course will continue on a rolling basis with different material being explore in each term. We will aim to share your progress in a concert at an appropriate time during the year. More taught courses will be made available if there is a demand.
