UAL Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design

This part time course is taught on Mondays and Fridays 10:00 - 17:00 with students working independently for a minimum of one additional day a week for personal research, essay writing and developing a sketchbook and self reflective journal. Over the 3 terms, you will follow practical projects in: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Photography and digital media, Mixed media (textiles). Projects are underpinned by 1:1 tutorials, group appraisals, self-directed study, gallery visits, and a contextual studies programme. One of the strengths of the part time level 3 Art Foundation course run at Morley's Westminster site is that everyone has the opportunity to work in all of the above subject areas throughout the course and can join other art classes at Morley free or at a discount. In November, you will start preparing a personal statement and digital portfolio for application to University. There are visits from lecturers from degree courses to give advice on portfolio building and some students (who are eligible) have the opportunity to attend extra portfolio preparation classes at UAL. Over the 3 terms, you will submit work for assessment, and need to pass 3 units to gain the qualification. The final unit is to prepare work for exhibition in the prestigious Morley Gallery in July.

Occasionally, visiting lecturers are scheduled in between 4 and 5pm after the Monday or Friday classes. You can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) to fund all or part of these. Morley may also be able to assist with childcare and study related costs depending on your financial status and you may be eligible for financial help with buying course materials through the Advanced Learner or RFSA fund. For more information about financing your studies visit www.morleycollege.ac.uk/access The art foundation course is very demanding both in time and effort and your tutors, who are experienced practitioners in their fields, will offer support and guidance throughout the year with your work and with your university application. The course leader is also available to assist with problems and concerns. Applications must be made online. If you meet the entry requirements you will be invited to an interview with portfolio and an assessment.

You will need access to the internet and a computer (desktop, laptop, tablet or iPad) that allows you to view images in a good size and quality. You will also be required to upload materials and links to share with your class and for assessment. A digital camera and/or smartphone with a camera is essential for documenting work. Most materials are provided - however there are some additional charges made at cost price for specialist print papers, etching metals, canvas and sculpture materials for the final project. If you are on a low income, you may be eligible for financial support with buying materials and equipment through the advanced learner or RFSA fund.

The course is designed to provide advice and guidance in building a portfolio for application to Fine Art Degree programmes and other Higher Education courses at Art colleges and universities. Morley students are guaranteed an interview at University of the Arts for degree programmes such as painting, printmaking, design, photography, film, animation, illustration and sculpture. Our students gain places at major universities and colleges across the country including Central St Martins, Camberwell, Courtauld Institute, Ravensbourne, London Met, Kingston, Wimbledon, Norwich and Middlesex University and Goldsmiths. Some students who have already studied other subjects at degree go on to study at postgraduate level.
