What you will learn

Explore relief printing from different materials, with an emphasis on experimentation. Investigate techniques and surfaces such as lino, wood and recycled materials to build your ability to make choices in your printmaking practice and to make interesting prints. Work in lino, including etched lino, in the first part of term, and explore colour printing and layering. After that, explore found wood surfaces and recycled materials. The class is suitable for beginners and more experienced printmakers who work alongside each other and share ideas and knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • make relief prints from wood, lino and recycled materials and combinations of the materials
  • build on printmaking skills, develop personal visual language and critical decision making skills through print
  • participate and engage with your peer group in order to progress in your work
  • build technical knowledge, and professional expertise in the safe use of printmaking equipment and the print workshop
  • look at artists work to support and enrich your own work

Class format and activities

Teaching will include projects, demonstration group crit, peer review. You will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook to support the development of ideas and to record technical information. Tutorial will happen in group work and one-to-one. Personal time to explore and develop your own work.

Entry requirements

This class is open to all students. An interest in drawing and exploration will be useful.

What you need to know before you enrol

Health and safety information will be given at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. You will be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow procedures as advised. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy, and some may cause irritation in very rare cases. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant or have any sensitivities and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.. Note: at present there is no wheelchair access to the print studio, and the studios are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. If you have any mobility issues please contact the department prior to enrolling.

What you need

Please bring to the first class: pencils, pens, and a sketchbook. Protective clothing for printmaking is provided, or you can bring your own apron and rubber gloves. The course fee includes most studio consumables (ink, cleaning materials, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for paper, lino blocks etc. These are available to buy in the department at cost price, in cash. Further requirements will be discussed at the first and subsequent classes.
