What you will learn

Join this course to explore intaglio printmaking and to work on a personal project. The class is suitable for beginners and returning students who have attended either of the two previous terms this year. With an emphasis on finding the best process for your personal ideas, this course will allow you to complete at least one finished print or small set of prints to a high standard.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • make a small set of intaglio prints
  • explore intaglio processes such as drypoint, carborundum or etching as appropriate to your ideas
  • build on printmaking skills, develop personal visual language and critical decision making skills through print
  • learn how to print more than one colour and/ or prints using more than one plate/ technique
  • participate and engage with your peer group in order to progress in your work
  • build technical knowledge, and professional expertise in the safe use of printmaking equipment and the print workshop

Class format and activities

You will be making plates and prints and use the studio equipment. Teaching is both in groups and on an individual, one-to-one basis, with technical and critical advice depending on your needs. The tutor will give demonstrations, lead on exercises presentations and facilitate group discussions. In the second half of term you will develop a personal print project.

Entry requirements

No previous experience of printmaking is necessary, but an interest, or experience of drawing or design is useful. You may have some previous experience and want to develop and practice your own choice of technique as a printmaker.

What you need to know before you enrol

Health and safety information will be given at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. You will be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow procedures as advised. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions. Some of the presses and processes require physical strength; the tutor will assist if you need help. Note: at present there is no wheelchair access to the print studio, and the studios are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. If you have any mobility issues please contact the department prior to enrolling. Note: There is no wheelchair access to the studio

What you need

You will need pencils, a sketchbook or notebook and a portfolio to take work home in. The course fee includes most studio consumables (basic inks, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for paper, etching plate, acrylic sheet etc. These are available to buy in the department and will be discussed at the start of the class. Further requirements will be discussed at the first and subsequent classes.
