Discover the dynamic and diverse world of ceramic art in this engaging course that explores the foundations and contemporary practices of the medium. Throughout the course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of ceramics through hands-on exploration and theoretical study, allowing them to develop their artistic skills and creative expression. The course begins with a broad overview of hand-building techniques, providing students with a solid foundation in working with clay. They will become acquainted with different types of clay, tools, techniques, glazing, surfacing materials, and firing processes. From wedging to pinching, coiling to slab building, and even mould making, students will acquire essential skills to bring their artistic visions to life. A key emphasis of the course is on developing individuality and personal aesthetics. Through material investigation and experimentation, students will have the opportunity to expose their unique artistic voice. Thought-provoking projects, centred around engaging concepts, processes, and techniques, will inspire critical thinking and creativity, allowing students to create innovative ceramic artworks. Studio safety must always be a priority. Students will learn the importance of using appropriate protective gear, mastering basic tools and equipment, and maintaining a clean and efficient workspace. In this dynamic and collaborative learning environment, students will have the freedom to express their ideas, make mistakes, and engage in constructive feedback and criticism. The course also provides valuable opportunities for demonstrations, lectures, critiques, and exhibitions, enhancing students' learning experience.

Learning Outcomes

Class format and activities

Tutor led practical activity and discussion, workshops, critical analysis and practical development.

Entry requirements

This class is open to beginners who want to explore the foundations and contemporary practices of the ceramics medium.

What you need to know before you enrol

The main objective of this course is to cultivate artistic skills and foster creative expression. The primary emphasis is on exploring the artistic possibilities of the medium, rather than focusing on the production of functional ceramic wares. Students will have the opportunity to delve into the creative aspects of ceramics and expand their artistic horizons through various projects and exercises. There is some physical activity in ceramics, for example carrying a bag of clay (12.5kg), wedging or rolling out clay, which requires a moderate level of physical fitness - if you have any concerns (back problems, for example) please talk to your tutor who will be happy to give guidance, or assistance if required.

What you need

A sketchbook and pen are useful. You will also need an apron or old shirt. Your tutor will advise you about which tools to purchase. Clay is available to purchase from your tutor.
