The population of London grew dramatically in the 19th century. A bigger population meant more dead people and London's existing burial grounds couldn't cope. This course looks at the Magnificent Seven Victorian London cemeteries that were built to accommodate dead Londoners. The course looks at the history of the cemeteries, who is buried in them and how to read the symbolism of Victorian gravestones
Each session will involve information from the tutor and relevant documents with opportunities for student question and answers and reflections. Original documents may also be used to promote discussion and thinking about the period. Information about other current London topics can also be shared in the class. Students may also be asked to make their own presentations on a topic of their choosing.
While this course will refer to previous courses no previous knowledge of London history is assumed and any background information will be available either as hard copy or on line. A booklist will be available and students may find background reading helpful, although not essential. A reasonable level of English comprehension is helpful.
