What you will learn

This 3-day intensive course is for beginners, with little or no experience of the subject area; it provides the opportunity to discover the art of fusing glass, and explore within it a variety of fusing techniques. You will learn about glass as a raw material in its varying forms, the fundamentals of glass cutting, assembly of glass for fusing, and the use of metal inclusions. You will gain an understanding of kiln firings and how temperature affects glass within fusing and slumping results. This course is the perfect introduction for beginners, but also an opportunity for anyone interested in art and craft, or design to experiment with glass as a material.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply glass cutting and assembly skills to produce a range of fused glass samples
  • Produce fused glass pieces exploring varying glass types including metal inclusions
  • Be able to produce glass pieces using varying glass types to produce colour, texture and form
  • Understand and evaluate the suitability of selected materials within the glassmaking process

  • Class format and activities

    You will be working on set tasks guided by your expert glass tutor, Anna Chrysopoulo. Teaching takes place in a practical workshop setting, allowing you to explore glass types and techniques to produce colour, texture and pattern in your glass through both tutor lead discussion, demonstration and practical making. Informal assessment will take place on a continual basis throughout the course using observation, and also a group Learner presentation at the end of the course outlining your results and experience of fused glass. To ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

    Entry requirements

    This course is for beginners, with little or no experience of the subject area. If you already have knowledge of glass making, this course also offers you the opportunity to refresh and develop existing skills, or maybe explore other specialist materials.     What you need to know before you enrol

    The fee includes tuition, specialist materials, alongside use of specialist equipment, including glass kiln firings etc. However, Learners will be expected to purchase some of their own Kiln-formed glass materials such as alternative glass types (guidance will be given by the tutor on the first session). You may need to purchase your own small tools, and possibly some additional materials as advised by your tutor.

    What you need

    It would be helpful to bring a sketchbook/notebook, pencils/pen/marker pen etc. You will need to wear sturdy shoes, boots or trainers (no open sandals); an apron. We have basic tools in the workshop which have been adapted to facilitate a safe learning environment. Glass and other materials are available for sale to students, however, Learners may want to buy or bring in their own resources, to have a wider variety in choice of materials
