What you will learn

This course equips students with the skills needed for Functional Skills English. Successful completion of this term enables them to progress and take the reading, writing and speaking and listening exams.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify different types of text and their purpose
  • Understand how different language devices have an impact on readers
  • identify persuasive language techniques in texts and use them in your own writing
  • Prepare and deliver a short talk on a subject of your own choice

Class format and activities

Students work in pairs, groups and independently. There is a lot of focus on discussion and on improving writing skills. We use real-world texts and past papers to help students improve their English for work and assessment.

Entry requirements

Most students will have progressed from the two-week induction; otherwise, admission to the course is through interview and a reading and writing task.
