What you will learn

For new creative writers or those looking for a way to focus their writing activity and get new ideas. You will consider all aspects of writing fiction and poetry. You will be encouraged to develop your individual writing voice and to read your work in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. New students are welcome to join at the beginning of any term.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Produce a range of written work in response to writing exercises
  • Write clear and vivid description using the five senses
  • Understand how plot works and use it effectively in your story writing
  • Evaluate and discuss a piece of writing with sensitivity
  • Recognise your own writing capabilities and draw strength and confidence from these
  • Understand some of the key features of poetry (e.g. rhyme, image, line breaks)

Class format and activities

Practical writing exercises designed to develop the imagination and promote confidence. Group discussion of published work. Group discussion of each other’s work in a supportive workshop atmosphere. You will receive advice and guidance from the tutor on all aspects of writing, and help with individual writing problems.

Entry requirements

Level 2 in written English, but enthusiasm and the desire to write are equally important.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course will be taught online due to restrictions from the Covid 19 pandemic. Students will have access to coursework via Morley Moodle and Microsoft Teams.
