This is a classical repertoire course for singers who already possess solid technique and confidence in singing in a range of languages, and wish to hone their technique and interpretation skills at an advanced level.
Following a master-class format, students will have regular, individual sessions to perform own-choice repertoire (as advised by the tutor), receive advice and guidance from the tutor and get feedback from fellow classmates. You will also engage in a range of class activities including: singing a range of vocal exercises, addressing issues of posture and breathing. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. Achievement on your course will be measured by your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes and will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to another course.
You will need to have completed at least three years of vocal training, using 'classical' vocal technique. You also need to be able to sing in tune, have a sense of timing and a basic understanding of musical notation.
Due to the “master-class” format, you will need to be willing to perform solo repertoire in front of your peers and tutor. Your individual repertoire of songs will be chosen in conjunction with the tutor and/or need tutor approval to ensure they are suitable for your voice type, level of experience and personal goals. You will perform a different piece at least every other week and you should present work in at least two foreign languages across the duration of the course. Your performance needs to be prefaced by a short introduction to the piece and a translation when necessary.
You will need three copies of your chosen songs (one for the tutor, one for the accompanist, and one for yourself), and any preferred personal equipment for taking notes on your progress and further goals, eg. a recording device such as your smartphone, or a notepad and a pen.
