What you will learn

This is a beginner’s introduction to a range of sculpture construction and assemblage techniques. You will learn foundational woodworking skills using power tools and hand tools, and develop a sculptural project using found materials and objects, wire, foam, latex, plaster and wood.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Gain an understanding of basic woodworking techniques, hand tools and power tools.
  • Learn about a range of sculpture materials and terminology.
  • Be able to plan and produce a small, permanent sculpture, from drawing to construction.

Class format and activities

The first session will be an introduction to different techniques, tools and materials. We will look at other artists’ work and discuss your ideas. From there you will develop a small sculptural project, using found objects and drawings as your starting point, and will be guided in creating this in the workshop.

Entry requirements

This is a beginner’s course. There are no requirements other than an interest in creating sculptures. Some experience of drawing and art-making will be useful.

What you need to know before you enrol

The Sculpture Studio is on the ground floor of the Carlyle building at the Morley Chelsea Centre, Hortensia Road SW10. Basic materials included. Materials charged for when used over the allocated materials fee.

What you need

A sketchbook and drawing materials, and ideas! You are encouraged to bring in any sketches, found objects or materials that you are interested in working with for the first session. Please email flora.hunt@morleycollege.ac.uk if you have any questions.

What you can do next

You can progress to other short courses, including more advanced sculpture and casting courses at Morley, or use these sessions as an opportunity to build a portfolio to apply to longer accredited art courses.
