We will be carving , mouldmaking and casting wax, wood, resin and silver to make a series of finished jewellery pieces focusing on sculptural shaping. We will use silver fastenings thinking about how they complement the overall form of the piece . You will be encouraged to make a series of pieces relating to one another in theme. Suitable for Beginners and those will some jewellery experience.
After looking at and discussing examples and samples, you will start by carving a piece in wood and wax which we will then use to make a silicone rubber mould. You will weigh your wax piece to work out an approximate weight and cost in silver and be shown where to take it or send it to have it cast into silver or bronze. With the mould we have made we will make a resin version of our ring and we will also use commercially sourced moulds to make a variety of resin cast pieces of jewellery. On the last day we will be cleaning up our silver cast rings and our resin pieces. By the end of the course you will have a series of sculptural jewellery pieces that will form a small collection. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
The course is suitable for complete beginners and learners who want to gain further confidence in jewellery making techniques.
The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness to be able to use some of the jewellery equipment or machinery. You will be shown where to take or send your wax piece to be cast in silver or bronze. You will need to pay the casting company to cast your wax into silver or bronze. This cost is dependent on the size of your wax piece. The tutor will be able to give you an idea of this cost which is usually around £25. You may need to purchase silver findings such as catches etc. The tutor will be able to sell you some at cost price in the studio.
