What you will learn

Want to try your hand at writing poetry? This is a warm and welcoming workshop for beginner poets who want to learn more about poetry, write more regularly, and/or share their work in a kind and constructive environment. Work with a published, prize-winning poet, try out different genres and forms, develop your voice and enjoy being part of a writing community.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss poems with other writers
  • Build community with other writers
  • Learn more about various forms, genres and styles of poetry
  • Gain confidence as a writer
  • Write regularly in response to prompts or ideas generated in the workshop
  • Hone your writing and editing skills
  • Give helpful and constructive feedback on others' writing
  • Receive helpful and constructive feedback on your own writing, if you choose to share it

Class format and activities

Each workshop will include reading published poems/poets for inspiration, followed by focussed writing time. There will also be opportunities each week to share your poems in progress and receive feedback from the group, though as this is a beginners' workshop, sharing your writing is not compulsory.

An open mind, enthusiasm for writing, and readiness to read a variety of poems.

What you need

As this is an online course, you'll need a stable internet connection. Pen/pencil and notebook is highly recommended for free-writing, though you can also write on your computer, iPad or phone if you find these easier to work with.

What you can do next

Participants often continue to intermediate or advanced workshops, build community with other writers, share or perform their work, or get their poems published.
