What you will learn

This course offers a gentle Pilates based approach to building strength and mobility for the activities of daily life. The first hour of lessons focuses on developing postural core strength of the back and abdomen, in addition to strengthening the muscles of the hips, legs, and shoulders. This is followed by thirty minutes of targeted stretching and mobilisation for stiff hips, hamstrings, shoulders and the spine help to open up muscles and release joints. Throughout each lesson exercise options and adaptations suitable to all levels of ability will be offered by the tutor. Advice will be given on safe and effective techniques for comfortably increasing flexibility and mobility

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Increase postural strength around the spine
  • Effectively engage core muscles in the abdomen and back
  • Tone muscles of the hips, legs, and shoulders using the Pilates method
  • Breathe effectively for Pilates exercise and stretching
  • Feel stronger and more mobile in the activities of daily life
  • Increase flexibility and mobility around the hips and hamstrings
  • Gain improved mobility of the shoulders and upper back
  • Develop increased spinal mobility for forward bending, twisting, side reaching

Anyone interested in Pilates Experience of Pilates is not necessary, all levels welcome

What you need to know before you enrol

This course is very useful for people who would like to feel fitter, stronger and more mobile during the course of everyday activities in their daily life. Students who have suffered major injuries, or who suffer from joint, back or other muscular pain should be cleared for exercise by their doctor or physiotherapist before joining the course. The course does not offer physiotherapy, although adaptations and modifications can be provided to suit different physical conditions and ability levels.

What you need

Comfortable clothing suitable for movement. Much of the work will be in seated or lying, so an extra layer of clothing may be needed for warmth.
