What you will learn

In this practical course you will learn how to use composition, lighting and camera techniques, indoors and outdoors, to create successful portraits. By looking at the work of renowned portrait photographers, you will understand the different approaches to photographing people - from the studio portrait to street and documentary photography. You will learn some tips and will identify the challenges of portraiture and the techniques that will help you to resolve them. The course is based around practical demonstrations and hands on practice. You will be set tasks between the classes, as sharing your pictures with the tutor and the rest of the group will help to build your confidence.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use camera settings to achieve effective results
  • Direct and photograph people with confidence
  • Use artificial light and natural light to produce creative portraits
  • Photograph people in different situations

Class format and activities

You will learn actively and practice the demonstrated skills during the sessions; you will continuously be supported by the tutor.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for those who have a good understanding of the basics of photography in terms of aperture, shutter speed and ISO

This is a practical hands-on course for those who have a good understanding of basic camera skills and a passion for portraiture

What you need

You will need a DSLR (or mirrorless) camera that will allow you access to manual controls. A speedlight would be desirable
