This course will offer an opportunity to explore the potential of pulp and handmade paper for textiles using professional equipment. You will create paper from cotton and linen rags and recycled paper. A unique opportunity to view a range of Japanese paper textiles will lead to further experiments with paper thread for stitching, weaving, crochet and knitting and an exploration of paper as a surface for shibori tie dyeing, batik, printing and experimental collage.
Students will learn through observing tutor demonstration followed by practical experience supported by technical handouts. Complete beginners are encouraged to produce reference samples and returning students may have extra exercises in addition to set work where the tutor sees fit. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience through discussion, show and tell and group critique. The tutor will facilitate group discussions and work with students one-to-one and in groups. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment

The studio is located on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building on King Edward Walk. There is a lift to the first floor and a chair lift can be operated up to the second floor.
Two packs of J cloths, a jam jar, a plastic box or strong plastic bag for damp sheets of paper, a notebook and pen, any textiles you are currently working on.
