You will create paper from cotton and linen rags and recycled paper. Drawing on Eleanor’s experience in Japan, you will gain an understanding of Japanese papermaking. Whilst you will not use Japanese fibres to make paper, unique opportunities to handle Japanese papers and examine the different processes employed will lead to experiments which push the potential of paper as a creative medium.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand how pulp is prepared for papermaking using cotton rags and recycled rag paper.
  • Use a mould and deckle to produce a range of embossed, decorative and textured papers.
  • Respond to Japanese paper techniques with experiments that use accessible alternatives
  • Develop personal outcomes using paper and pulp
