A friendly introduction to painting and observational skills. You will be guided through techniques of acrylics and oil paint, responding to objects and images.
You will be taught by practical activities and exercises, including working from observation of still-life objects, drawing for painting, creating colour mixes and exploring tonal description through drawing and painting with a limited palette. We will look at the work of artists for inspiration, and you will be guided by 1:1 tuition and group demonstration and discussion. Techniques covered are: tonal description, mixing and using colour, composition. You will work in a variety of materials including pencil and charcoal, and both acrylic and oil paint. Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.
The course is suitable for beginners and for those with some experience wishing for a refresher.

You will need to provide your own materials. Watercolour paints 3 primaries will be sufficient: Red, Blue and Yellow. Watercolour brushes: Round tipped’ size 2, 5 and 10 and ‘Flat head’ size: #1 or #2 inches Watercolour paper Fabriano for example between 300 to 400gsm hot pressed Both for Acrylic and Oil Synthetic Brushes Long Handle From sizes 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 They are used for a range of techniques; fine detail, blending, glazing and layering paint. Acrylic and oil paint: 3 primaries Red, Blue Yellow and Black and White For oil paint Linseed Stand oil and Zest it or turps for thinning. Optional is Liquin for speeding up the drying process. Canvas board or Oil and acrylic paper. An apron or overall is useful.
