What you will learn

This course is designed for those who are interested in learning clay techniques, and like to learn through projects. In this course you will explore the material clay, develop ideas of what you can make and learn how to critique and present your work to your peers. You will need to complete a sketchbook that captures this journey. On completion of this course you will receive an NCFE Level 1 Award in Creative Crafts.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop a portfolio of work in ceramics.
  • Use materials, tools and equipment correctly and safely
  • Develop an understanding of health and safety considerations in the craft environment.

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Award in Creative Craft [NCFE]

Class format and activities

Demonstration, Q&A and guidance by tutor both individual and group these are practical hands-on sessions to develop your understanding of clay. You will receive handouts to take away with you. You may be required to do some work outside of class time in your sketchbook such as design work, or evaluations.

Entry requirements

None – Beginners welcome no previous knowledge of ceramics is required.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students, you need to be able to all the sessions to get the most out of this course. We make a per kilo charge for clay, which includes the bisque and glaze firing. We will be based in C22 a room used by the HND Ceramics groups on the second floor there is lift access.

What you need

Pen and sketchbook (A4), clothes you do not mind getting dirty, closed toe shoes. Please bring any clay tools you have, however, there will be pottery tools available to use on the course. The tutor can also advise you on tools to buy if you would like your own.
