What you will learn

This qualification will provide you with an understanding of the teaching and learning environment in a school setting. It will also support you towards further learning and training. You will learn about the development of children and young people and about how to keep children healthy, safe and well. The course also provides opportunities to develop wider transferable skills such as increased confidence, communication, working as a team and planning.

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Award in Preparing to Work in Schools [NCFE]

Class format and activities

You will be based in a classroom and will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. Typical activities will include group work, pair work, discussion and case studies. All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams, or setting up an information board.

Entry requirements

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 and above. The qualification is aimed at a range of learners, including young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs or where English is an additional language, learners who are thinking of working in a school setting. You do not need to be working or undertaking a practical placement to take this qualification.

You should arrive to your lessons prepared to learn with pens, pencils and a writing pad. All other resources and materials you need will be provided. In the event of teaching moving online, you will need a computer with internet access for online lessons on a daily basis.

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress on to the Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges or the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
