What you will learn

An opportunity to learn how natural dyes historically have been extracted from a variety of sources. Using natural dyes to explore a wide colour palette, applied to a variety of natural fibres/fabrics

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Learn about the history of natural dye and print
  • Discover how to extract colour from plants and kitchen waste
  • Understand how to prepare fabrics for dyeing using mordants
  • Begin a sample book of plant dye colours
  • Explore sustainable dye and print practice

Class format and activities

Students will learn through observing tutor demonstration followed by practical experience supported by technical handouts. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience through discussion, show and tell and group critique at the end of the session. The tutor will facilitate group discussions and work with students one-to-one and in groups. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for complete beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills.

What you need to know before you enrol
