What you will learn

This online course is the second and final module of our GCSE Maths Higher Tier learning programme, which starts in term 1 with Module 1 Stepping Up to GCSE Maths Higher Intensive Hybrid. It is an intensive, fast-paced accredited module that prepares you for the Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Mathematics Higher Tier exam. You will learn specific mathematical techniques with an emphasis on solving real-world problems. Please note: this course is fully funded only for students who have not previously achieved an A-C / 4-5 grade in GCSE Maths.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Number – Use cubes, roots, estimating, fractions, percentages and ratio/ direct proportion
Algebra - Quadratic equations (completing the square), Simultaneous equations (nonlinear), Algebraic fractions, Cubic and Reciprocal graphs
Geometry and Measures - Angles, Area and Volume, Circles and Cylinders, Transformations, Construction and Loci
Statistics and Probability - Collecting and Representing data, Mean Median and Mode, Probability
Problem-Solving Skills: Enhance problem-solving abilities by applying mathematical concepts and reasoning to a variety of mathematical and real-life situations. Develop strategies to break down complex problems, identify relevant information, and selec
Mathematical Reasoning and Justification: Enhance logical thinking and reasoning skills by critically analyzing mathematical statements, identifying patterns, making conjectures, and providing sound justifications for mathematical claims and solutions.
Exam Readiness: Students will exhibit readiness for the grades 3 to 9 questions of the GCSE Mathematics exam, demonstrating familiarity with the exam format, time management skills, and the ability to apply appropriate strategies to maximize performance.
Homework Completion: Successfully complete their GCSE Maths homework assignments using Mathswatch as a digital resource.

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: GCSE (9-1) in Mathematics [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

The course will be delivered through a combination of interactive in-centre and online lessons. You will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on exercises, group discussions, and individual study to reinforce your learning. Additionally, regular assessments and feedback will help you track your progress and identify areas that require further attention. You will attend two lessons a week with regular homework. Microsoft Teams and Mathswatch will be used as the main platforms for assignments and additional learning, including discussion boards, group chats, private messaging, and submitting coursework. Assessment Methods: Achievement on your course will be measured by formative and self-assessment against the learning outcomes. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course, you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets linked to the learning outcomes and future goals.

Entry requirements

Late joiners in January: Initial Assessments and interview to evaluate current maths knowledge and skills, including capability to study. These assessments help determine the students the appropriate level of the GCSE Maths course, whether it be Foundation or Higher. Students progressing from "Stepping up to GCSE Maths Higher": excellent record of attendance, punctuality and homework completion, as well as evidence of working at grade 4 or above in end of term 1 Higher tier mock exam.

What you need to know before you enrol

Before enrolling in GCSE Maths, it's important to consider the following steps and factors: Evaluate Personal Interest and Motivation: Reflect on your interest in mathematics and your goals. Attendance Requirement: Minimum 90% attendance and punctuality required. Personal Study Time: Set aside at least 10 hours per week for study and homework. By considering these steps and factors, you can make an informed decision about enrolling in GCSE Maths. Remember to gather information, seek guidance from trusted sources, and ensure that you have the necessary preparation and commitment to excel in the course.

What you need

A computer or laptop with a stable internet connection and Microsoft Teams for Work or School software is essential for accessing the online course materials, participating in virtual classes or discussions, and completing assignments. You must have your webcam on and have access to a microphone every time you join a live session on Microsoft Teams. Having a webcam and microphone will enable you to actively participate in discussions, ask questions, and collaborate with classmates and teachers. You will need an A4 squared ruled pad, pen, pencil, coloured highlighters and a folder in which to keep your work. You will also need: compass, protractor, ruler, pencils, pencil sharpener, eraser. You will also need a calculator (please be sure it is an allowed type and know how to use it well before the day of the exam). Recommended: Casio FX-85GTX or similar versions, e.g. FX-83GTX. Printer (Optional): Although not strictly required, having a printer allows you to print out worksheets, assignments, or practice papers for offline work or reference.
