What you will learn

Want to get more for your money? If you can confidently add, subtract, multiply and divide, this course will take you a step further in applying mathematical skills to solve problems of increasing complexity, through appropriate reasoning and decision making. This module is part of the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 programme and continues from "Module 1 Stepping up to Functional Skills Maths Level 2". You'll attend two sessions per week and take the Pearson Edexcel Level 2 Functional Maths exam upon completion. The learning outcomes for Module 2 include mastering the skills from Module 1, along with three new, slightly more challenging objectives:

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate expressions and make substitutions in given formulae in words and symbols, Follow the order of precedence of operators, including indices
  • Calculate percentage change (any size increase and decrease), and original value after percentage change
  • Understand and calculate using ratios, direct proportion and inverse proportion
  • Calculate amounts of money, compound interest, percentage increases, decreases and discounts including tax and simple budgeting
  • Convert between metric and imperial units of length, weight and capacity using a) a conversion factor and b) a conversion graph
  • Work out the probability of combined events including the use of diagrams and tables, including two-way tables

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics Level 2 [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

You will have in-centre lessons every week during term time. There will be compulsory homework. Microsoft Teams will be used for assignments and additional learning, including discussion boards, group chats, private messaging, and submitting coursework. Assessment methods: Achievement in your course will be measured by formative assessment against the learning outcomes and a final exam. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course, you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals, such as progressing to another course..

Entry requirements

To join this course, you need Maths skills at Level 1 or equivalent, along with demonstrating you are working towards level 2 or equivalent in English . All new students must take an initial assessment before enrolling, and assessment dates are regularly updated on our website. If you are a progressing student completing "Module 1: Stepping up to Functional Skills Maths Level 2," your tutor will assess whether you're ready to join this class or discuss alternative routes. This decision will be based on your progress towards set targets, attendance, homework, and assessment records.

What you need to know before you enrol

You are expected to attend every session. A minimum of 90% attendance and punctuality are required from all students. This course requires some personal study time in addition to the completion of homework. Please set aside at least 10 hours per week for these activities.

What you need

You will need a Casio FX-83GT CW scientific calculator, (or one of the previous versions e.g., FX-83GTX or FX-85GTX), You will also need writing materials, a notebook, a geometry set, and a computer/tablet with Internet access for your homework. A mobile phone alone may not be suitable for completing maths assignments.

Upon successfully completing this course, you'll have several progression opportunities. Based on your performance and the recommendation of your tutor, you can move on to GCSE Maths Foundation or Higher, pursue Level 3/Access courses within the college, or explore various employment opportunities. Your tutor will provide guidance on the most suitable path for you, taking into account your progress, attendance, homework, and assessment records.
