What you will learn

This course is designed for students who are interested in starting a GCSE Maths or a Functional Skills Level 2 programme in September 2025. Students will undergo assessment at the end of the course, and their overall performance will be reviewed to determine their readiness for progression, or a more suitable alternative.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Fundamental Mathematical Operations: Demonstrate proficiency in fundamental mathematical operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with integers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Geometry and Measures: Understand and apply concepts of geometry and measures, including properties of shapes, angles, perimeter, area, and volume.
  • Problem Solving and Mathematical Reasoning: Develop problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning to tackle a variety of mathematical challenges.
  • Writing Skills Enhancement: Improve writing skills by developing coherent answers to mathematical problems, with a focus on grammar, vocabulary, and structure.
  • Use Mathswatch to access assignments, lesson resources, video tutorials, interactive worksheets, and online feedback
  • Pass the end of course GCSE Maths Initial Assessment

Class format and activities

You will have one lesson per week. There will be compulsory homework. Microsoft Teams and Mathswatch VLE will be used for assignments and additional learning, including discussion boards, group chats, private messaging, and submitting coursework. Assessment methods: Achievement in your course will be measured by formative assessment against the learning outcomes and formative assessment by the end of the course. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course, you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals, such as progressing to another course.

Entry requirements

To join this course, you need Maths skills at Level 1 or equivalent, along with demonstrating you are working towards level 2 or equivalent in English. All new students must take an initial assessment before enrolling, and assessment dates are regularly updated on our website. Students progressing from Functional Skills Maths Level 1 or Module 1 Aim for Maths Level 2 will be invited to join based on their attendance and homework completion records from the previous term or academic year.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course runs once a week, and you are expected to attend every session. A minimum of 90% attendance and punctuality are required from all students. This course requires some personal study time in addition to the completion of homework. Please set aside at least 5 hours per week for these activities.

What you need

You will need a Casio FX-83GT CW scientific calculator, (or one of the previous versions e.g., FX-83GTX or FX-85GTX), You will also need writing materials, a notebook, a geometry set, and a computer/tablet with Internet access for your homework. A mobile phone alone may not be suitable for completing maths assignments.

What you can do next

After completing this course, you'll have the opportunity to move to the accredited Functional Skills Maths L2 or a GCSE Maths course in September 2025. Progression is offered by your tutor at the end of term 3, and the decision depends on your progress towards set targets, attendance, homework, and assessment records.
