What you will learn

An introduction to working with wax as a sculpture material. Develop your own project ideas with assistance from the tutor. Learn about working with soft and hard waxes, wax casting, making wax sculpture as a finished product or as a stage towards casting into metals or ceramic slip. Suitable for beginners and all levels. Basic materials included but charged for what is used over and above the materials allowance.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Model in hard and soft waxes and know their different advantages
  • Cast waxes into plaster moulds and make up sheet waxes
  • Create one or more finished artworks ready for casting in other materials
  • Create a variety of wax finishes and know about how to reinforce wax for showing it as a finished product
  • Safely handle hot waxes and general good workshop practice

Class format and activities

This is a practical course working with wax and plaster. There will be handouts and demonstrations of techniques and handling materials by the tutor, as well as group discussions and one to one feedback.

Entry requirements

None. This course is suitable for beginners and those who have had some experience of working with wax and sculpture.

What you need to know before you enrol

Some small lifting and manual dexterity required for working with wax and handling hot materials. Your tutor will guide you in working safely with this material.

What you need

Ideas, sketch books or small models for what you would like to make and any reference materials for ideas. Protective clothing, overalls or apron and covered shoes or boots. Basic materials included but charged for what is used over and above the materials allowance.
