Switching between camera views you will be able to work directly from the model, receive 1:1 feedback on your work and take part in group discussion. All abilities welcome. Beginners are guided through 6 week drawing course before starting to paint.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Draw using: line, mass, mark making, brush and tone, in a variety of speeds and mixing media
  • Work with greater awareness of drawing and painting the form
  • Paint with a limited palette
  • Mix colour to create space
  • Develop confidence and an individual vision without feeling daunted by technique

Class format and activities

This is a practical class, and you will spend most of your class time drawing and / or painting. The course will focus on observational studies drawing and painting from a live model. If you choose the online option, you may also like to draw or paint someone living with you who is prepared to model for you. You could also choose to make transcriptions from existing figure drawings and paintings by artists selected by you or your tutor. Your tutor will communicate with you via email and classes will be presented live online via ZOOM. For all students’ techniques will include: Contour and cross contour drawing with pencil. Weight & modelling with charcoal, brush, and tone. Gesture drawing with charcoal & pencil. Painting will include progressing from a limited to a wide-ranging palette focussing on form and tonal values. Beginners will concentrate on drawing during the beginning stages and will be guided through various techniques with the aim of exploring chosen techniques in more depth over a longer period. Returning students will pursue personal projects working in chosen medium exploring new techniques in painting & drawing. Although there are limitations when working from home, there is an opportunity here to meet with others online, to practice skills and investigate ideas away from the college studio. It might be that your work could (in part) reflect elements from this challenging time.
