What you will learn

This course will allow you to explore sculpture in life and portrait head modelling in clay working from different life models in a variety of poses. You will develop observational and modelling skills and individual creativity. New and returning students work alongside each other in a mutually supportive environment. Learners will be encouraged to explore their own personal approach, developing confidence & skills in a creative, supportive and well equipped studio. Basic materials included. Extra charge for materials used over and above the allocated material course fee. This course is linked with the same model and pose with the morning course VSC018A B C.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Beginner Learners will: Practise clay handling techniques for firing and knowledge of Health and Safety procedures working with clay
  • Returning/Intermediate/Advanced Learners will: Improve skills and confidence in clay modelling, handling techniques for firing and Health and Safety procedures
  • All Learners will: Learn and develop observation skills working from a life model and understand typical distortions in figure modeling
  • Understand measuring scales and comparison
  • Explore new approaches and develop individual approach
  • Explore colouring and finishing techniques on completed clay modelled sculptures

Class format and activities

You will be making your own clay life sculptures with guidance from your tutor. Tuition is primarily one-to-one and within the class group. Step by step instruction and demonstration is given on new techniques. Hand outs are given on methods, Health & Safety, materials, techniques & reference materials. All learners can negotiate individual learning goals with tutor and record and assess these goals on the Individual learning Plans.In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

All levels welcome from beginners to the experienced with a keen interest in exploring Life modelling and 3 Dimensional form.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course takes place in Pelham Hall offsite from Main College (check map on website). Some lifting is required but help is always on hand.

What you need

Protective clothing i.e. recommended overall or apron, strong shoes or boots. Some extra fees will be charged for materials and ceramic firing when the student uses over and above their allocated course materials fee. Sketch pad and pencils.

Progress onto: other sculpture and visual art courses in the department; foundation art and design or pre-foundation courses; and/or pursue one’s own creativity independently in own studio.
