Please note this is an in class course and you will be expected to follow social distancing and safe working guidance.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Introduce an element of movement in your work using wire frames, tubes, handles and wire
  • Use rivets and/ or hinges to join elements in your work which retain movement
  • Use basic automata principles to create moving elements to your work
  • make a series of samples that will build on previous jewellery making experience and allow for the refinement of skills and the development of an individual style and interest in kinetic Jewellery

Class format and activities

Throughout the five sessions, there will be a number of demonstrations that will introduce methods of introducing movement in Jewellery and small objects. After each demonstration you will have the opportunity to make your own samples using the techniques shown. Ongoing and intermediate students will make a series of samples that will build on previous jewellery making experience and allow for the refinement of skills and the development of an individual style and interest in kinetic Jewellery. We will look at examples of kinetic work by Jewellers and sculptors as inspiration throughout the course. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge through discussion and show and tell and group crit. The tutor will work with students one to one and in groups.
