What you will learn

Get creative and explore the potential of Upcycling Glass. Explore creative reuse; transforming wasteful, useless, or unwanted glass products into new glass forms of another quality with artistic value. Experiment with upcycling varying glass types through a transformation process of breaking, reassembling and reforming towards recreating fused and slumped glass. Our expert tutor will guide you through a range of essential glass forming techniques: you will be introduced to varying glass types for upcycling including bottle and window glasses, alongside ‘bring your own glass’; kiln-forming processes necessary for the handling, cutting and breaking of glass, together with specific construction processes for fusing and slumping techniques. This course is the perfect introduction for beginners, but also an opportunity for more advanced learners to experiment and explore with upcycling glass as a material within self-directed projects, as well as skill building.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply creative technical skills to produce a wide range of fused and slumped, or 3D glass test pieces.
  • Understand and evaluate the suitability of selected materials within the glassmaking process.
  • Work independently, safely and confidently within a glass studio environment.

Class format and activities

You will be working on set tasks undertaken within individual projects guided by your expert glass tutor, Anna Chrysopoulo. Teaching takes place in a practical workshop setting, including both demonstration and discussion. Informal assessment will take place on a continual basis throughout the course using observation, one to one discussions, as well as a group Learner presentation at the end of the course outlining the development of your glass forms. To ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

This course is for beginners, with little or no experience of the subject area. If you already have knowledge of glass making, this course also offers you the opportunity to refresh and develop existing skills. The course is suitable for anyone interested in learning or further exploration within fusing and slumping techniques, creating decorative and functional glass forms. What you need to know before you enrol

The fee includes tuition, specialist materials, alongside use of specialist equipment, including glass kiln firings etc. However, Learners will be expected to purchase some of their own Kiln-formed glass materials such as alternative glass types (guidance will be given by the tutor on the first session). You may need to purchase your own small tools, and possibly some additional materials as advised by your tutor.

What you need

It would be helpful to bring a sketchbook/notebook, pencils/pen/marker pen etc. You will need to wear sturdy shoes, boots or trainers (no open sandals); an apron. We have basic tools in the workshop which have been adapted to facilitate a safe learning environment. Glass and other materials are available for sale to students, however, Learners may want to buy or bring in their own resources to have a wider variety in choice of materials.

What you can do next

With these transferable skills you will have the opportunity and ability to work independently towards your own professional development, or to further develop your creative potential and expand your learning within 3D studies: we encourage progression onto intermediate and advanced courses, (dependant on ability), within our glass provision at Morley, such as the UAL Level 2 in Glass for example, as well as other courses in Art & Design the college provides. Please speak with your tutor for further advice or information.
