What you will learn

This course is for anyone who wants to find out more about Chemistry for fun or for future study. Learn about the building blocks of the world around us and chemical reactions through a series of engaging sessions in an online environment.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Distinguish between physical and chemical processes and understand a range of separation techniques for compounds and mixtures
  • Describe the structure of the atom and understand how elements are arranged in the Periodic Table
  • Describe different types of chemical bonding
  • Identify acids, alkalis and neutral substances and understand practical uses of acids and alkalis
  • Describe chemical reactions using chemical equations
  • Describe the factors affecting reaction rates

Class format and activities

A series of fun and engaging sessions delivered by a subject specialist in Chemistry. You will learn through demonstrations, lecture, problem solving, videos, model building and discussion. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and your own future goals i.e.: progression to an advanced- level course.In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
