What you will learn

This course consolidates and builds on skills already learnt in Kathak. Progression will include emphasis on accuracy and quality of movement. The course content will include repertoire with varied footwork, sparkling rhythms, dramatic moves and subtle expressional phrases. If you are new to Kathak at Morley, a minimum of one year's previous experience is required. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Present further appropriately complex compositions in teentaal -rhythmic cycle of 16 beats- {laya/bol jati, complex tihais}
  • Perform padanth (recitation) of all learnt compositions in teentaal
  • Do padanth (recitation) of ashtamangal taal (rhythmic cycle of 11 beats) theka in single, double and quadruple tempo
  • Practise tatkar (footwork) in ashtamangal in single, double and quadruple tempo
  • Practise compositions in ashtamangal taal-Aamad, tukras, tihai-s, paran and ladi
  • Perform an expressional item - ghazal - a musical composition with lyrics in Urdu *Technique - a) variety of footwork, b) double turns on one beat

Class format and activities

Sessions will involve: doing a general and a style specific warm up to prepare the body for dance. doing patterns of movements demonstrated by the tutor; learning the padanth (recitation) of a new taal ashtamangal and relating the syllables to the sounds on the tabla (Indian percussion instrument). You will be learning an expressional item- a ghazal - Urdu poetry set to music. Sometimes you will work individually or in a small group and at other times as part of the whole class. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor. The tutor will also set assessment activities involving student exchange of ideas and student self-assessment for all students.

Entry requirements

At least 5 years previous training In Kathak. For some with experience of any dance form the period may be reduced at the discretion of the tutor.

What you need to know before you enrol

The course will help in building stamina. A level of fitness to undertake continuous activity for about an hour is expected. However adjustments can be made to meet personal physical and learning needs if the tutor is made aware of it. The students are required to dance in bare feet. Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course may include some completion of activities outside of class time e.g. preparation of favourite exercises to share with fellow students. Study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites and connection with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning. Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed. Dance study offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to increase fitness whilst enhancing wellbeing. Dance practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment by means of encouraging increased confidence, physical dexterity and concentration.
