What you will learn

Learn the essential skills of stringing and knotting using a variety of threads and finishing techniques with the use of gimp and catches to teach you all you need to know to create the perfect strung piece of jewellery. Basic materials provided although you may want to bring some special stones or beads.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Complete at least one necklace (or bracelet)
  • Thread rows of beads and attach fasteners both correctly and securely
  • Thread and knot rows of beads and stones
  • Use gimp correctly

    After looking at and discussing examples and samples, the tutor will demonstrate techniques of stringing, threading and beading. You will then produce a practice piece of jewellery using the materials provided to become familiar with the techniques. In the afternoon you will continue to practice with your own designs and work through any problems and questions with help from the tutor. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience, through discussion, show and tell and group crit. The tutor will facilitate group discussions and work with the students one-to-one and in groups.In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment

    Entry requirements

    No previous experience of jewellery making is necessary. Enthusiasm is an asset!.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    This is a practical course and will require hand skills for working with threads and knotting techniques. The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access

    What you need

    Any broken necklaces and collections of drilled stones and beads that you may have with you for re-stringing. Beads are provided in the class for learning the techniques.• a notebook, a pen, a pair of small scissors and a fabric tape measure.• If you have a ‘bead board’ do bring it with you

    The course provides an excellent start to jewellery making or a refresher or taster of new techniques.
