What you will learn

Extend your stone setting skills by learning how to set facetted stones such as marquis, trillion, square, pear and heart shapes while developing your knowledge of tool use. We will use pre- cast settings which can be incorporated into simple pieces of jewellery. Time permitting we will also learn flush setting. Intermediate Level.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Set up and sharpen a scorper
  • Use setting tools to set stones
  • Set different types of shaped stone, trillion, marquise, square, heart and pear
  • Use polishing techniques to finish your jewellery

Class format and activities

We will look at and discuss examples of stone set facetted stones. You will learn how to prepare a scorper tool for stone setting. We will use pre-cast stone settings to practice the techniques of setting stones such as marquis, trillion, square, pear and heart shaped stones. You can incorporate your settings into a simple piece of jewellery. , Demonstrations will be given to the group and backed up by help on a one to one basis, There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience, through discussion, show and tell and group crit.

Entry requirements

This is an Intermediate/ Advanced level course. Familiarity with the jewellery studio environment and the use of hand tools is recomended to maximise the learning opportunities of the course.

What you need to know before you enrol

The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness to be able to use jewellery equipment. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions. This course requires using a hand engraver which requires a certain amount of strength and pressure on your hands.

What you need

All tools needed to take part in the course are available in the workshop we also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals and sample stones., All tools are provided with an option to buy the gravers/ scorpers that you use to set the stones at the end of the course- approx £15 each (optional) . The silver costs are around £20. The stones used will be cz's.
