Create a unique piece of jewellery in colourful anodised aluminium. Students will be introduced to a host of colouring and decorative techniques including dip-dyeing, direct application, printmaking and the clever use of resists. There will be plenty of time to experiment and explore the material before focusing on final pieces of jewellery. Basic materials costs included in the course fee. Suitable for all levels.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Learn how to work (colour, cut, file and form) anodised aluminium
- Learn several colouring and decorative techniques on anodised aluminium
- Make at least three colourful pieces of jewellery in anodised aluminium- earrings, pendant or bangle to a professional standard
- Identify the correct use of Jewellery hand tools, machinery and colouring medium and understand health and safety issues in the workshop
- Know where and how to obtain materials and information relevant to working in this medium

Class format and activities
After looking at and discussing examples and samples, the tutor will demonstrate techniques of dip-dyeing, direct application, several printmaking techniques and the use of resists to create surface colouring. You will explore a variety of relief surfaces and learn how to print them on their own and in combination, and how to experiment with colour. After exploring these techniques we will apply them to making some simple pieces of jewellery. , There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience, through discussion, show and tell and group crit. The tutor will facilitate group discussions, and work with students one-to-one and in groups.

The course is suitable for complete beginners and learners who want to gain further confidence in jewellery making techniques.
What you need to know before you enrol
Many of the Art & Design studios have limited accessibility. If you have restricted mobility please contact the Art & Design Administrator on 02074501934 or Learning Support on 02074501835 before enrolling., , The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building. There is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness to be able to use some of the jewellery equipment or machinery. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions
What you need
It would be helpful to bring:, Apron, notebook, and pen. , Any material for printmaking that you already have; ready-made rubber stamps, ready prepared lino cuts, feathers, scraps of textured wallpaper, textured fabrics, etc. Anything which might leave an interesting print., If you wish to make a final piece incorporating silver or silver findings, then please bring any 0.8mm silver wire that you may have for earring wires and jump-rings or £3 to cover silver purchases from the tutor (see below)., You may need to pay for some materials/ aluminium and silver, which will be available at cost price in the jewellery department. This cost is likely to be £10-£15, depending on the size of your work.

The course provides an excellent start to jewellery making or a refresher or taster of new techniques. You could continue on to beginner, intermediate or advanced jewellery making classes at Morley College.
