What you will learn

This course is the second part (term 2) of a connected three-term course. Each term focuses on different aspects of writing. This course focuses on spelling, irregular verbs, simple rules for capitalisation and punctuation, formal and informal language and the linking of simple sentences in order to improve the clarity and fluidity of writing. The course will help build learners confidence in writing and encourage them to ‘edit’ their own writing. Writing will be assessed using our college correction code, and learners will be encouraged to understand the individual mistakes they are making and improve their writing through this process.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use common irregular verbs accurately.
  • Apply spelling rules to your writing and maintain a personal spelling table.
  • Understand the differences between informal and formal language in writing.
  • Write more fluently and with more confidence.

Class format and activities

This course is in college. All the lessons will take place in one of the newly-renovated classrooms. You will work individually, in pairs, in small groups or as a whole class. You will also have the chance to talk on a one-to-one level with your tutor. You will experience a varied range of activities, such as spelling and irregular verb tests, interviews/pair-work, gap-fills, writing activities focusing on stories and narrative tenses, as well as the use of some helpful online videos and websites, and an interactive whiteboard to help you learn. Everything that you learn will help you in your daily life and work. You will have an individual learning plan with targets that are personal to you.
