What you will learn

The course aims to enable students to begin to communicate with some fluency in a range of travel situations. The emphasis is on the practical use of German and the development of your speaking and listening skills.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Talk about German speaking travel destinations, sightseeing and modes of transport,
  • Describe places of interest,
  • Ask for directions,
  • Express simple opinions,
  • Understand information e.g. travel brochures, travel websites,
  • Use relevant grammatical structures in context.

Class format and activities

This course is characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. While on the course, you will be able to: increase your vocabulary and improve confidence by speaking about specific areas in German speaking countries, gain a wider understanding of important places and regions, develop more independence in applying the language to various travel situations, focus on speaking and listening: pair- / group work, pronunciation and intonation practice, audio / video / online material, improve reading and writing skills: print and online resources, short texts and messages, refresh basic grammar in context. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. If you are not pursuing a qualification, you and your tutor will be asked to assess the progress you have made at the end of the course.

Entry requirements

Students should have basic knowledge of German. Methods are adapted to students’ needs and learning preferences. Students are expected to participate actively and attend regularly. Students will be required to do some reading in preparation for each session.

What you need to know before you enrol

Please note that the College expects all students to keep good attendance. You will gain most from your course if you attend every session. Missing a class or lateness can make it hard to take part fully. Course outlines tell you what you can expect to achieve – this assumes that you are present throughout. However, we appreciate that absence is sometimes unavoidable. Please contact the College if you will be absent.
