Class format and activities

At Morley College we are committed to doing more than simply passing an exam. The course will be offered at our North Kensington Centre in our purpose built Science lab and will be taught by our expert teachers. You will learn through a mixture of lecture, group work, interactive workshop, practical work, problem solving and additional e-learning resources. A large component of the course will focus on developing skills in problem solving and scientific thinking in preparation for the exam but also for further study. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above during 2 externally assessed exams in May/June. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these outcomes with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and your future goals i.e.: progression to an advanced- level course.

Entry requirements

Whilst there are no specific entry requirements; a good working knowledge of Maths and English is essential. Applicants will be invited to interview to determine their suitability for the course

What you need to know before you enrol

Your GCSE chemistry course will be very enjoyable, but also requires real dedication and commitment if you are going to succeed. Your course requires attendance one day a week for 4 hours and the course runs from the beginning of September to the end of May. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course also requires significant study/completion of activities outside of class time. The course is assessed by two externally-assessed papers: Paper 1 - 1 hour 45 min written examination (50%) and Paper 2 - 1 hour 45 min written examination (50%). The papers will consist of a mixture of different question styles, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, calculations and extended open response questions.

What you need

You will require all stationary for your course (pens, pencils, ruler, paper) and a scientific calculator. You will also require access to a computer/tablet to aid your study. Obtaining your own copy of the student book and revision guides to accompany the course is also recommended.

What you can do next

The course will provide a solid foundation in one of the fundamental sciences so you can apply to study a L3 course such as A level Biology, Access to HE: Science, Access to HE: Health and Human Science, or L3 Health and Social Care (additional entry requirements may apply). The course can also be used to meet GCSE Science requirements for entry to University for a range of courses, including primary teaching.
