What you will learn

Gain the confidence and skills to write effectively, read with fluency and use language appropriately in formal settings. You will read a variety of texts, gaining knowledge and understanding that can be applied to reading and writing for work and study. You will develop the skills and confidence to give formal presentations and speak in a group. You will work towards achieving a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Read and understand a range of texts, including articles, reports and narratives.
  • Identify main ideas, supporting details and implied meanings in a text.
  • Use reading strategies to extract specific information and make inferences.
  • Write clear and coherent paragraphs and short texts, using appropriate grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Structure and organise ideas effectively in writing.
  • Write formal and informal letters, emails and reports.
  • Participate in conversations and discussions on a variety of topics, expressing opinions and providing explanations.
  • Listen and understand complex spoken instructions, explanations, and presentations.
  • Speak fluently and confidently, adapting language to different situations and audiences.

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Functional Skills Qualification in English [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

You will work on reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will learn through tutor instruction, discussion, group work, independent study and individual presentations. You will be given regular homework assignments in reading and writing. Achievement on your course will be measured by a pass at Functional Skills English Level 1. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to Functional Skills English Level 2.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English. You will have been born and raised in an English-speaking country or studied in English. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. You will be required to study outside of class time and be able to use the internet.

What you need

You will need an A4 lined writing pad with margin, pen, pencil, coloured highlighters, a dictionary and a ring binder folder in which to keep your work.

If you have excellent attendance and pass Functional Skills English Level 1, you may be advised to progress to Functional Skills English Level 2.
