What you will learn

Get better at reading and writing and gain the confidence to progress to the next level. This course is for students who have completed Entry 3 Functional Skills English, but need more time to further develop their skills before progressing to Level 1. The course runs every term and students may complete one or more terms at this level before moving on to the accredited course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Read a variety of texts with greater fluency and understanding
  • Write grammatical and correctly punctuated sentences
  • Use a range of strategies to correctly spell words linked to work, study and daily life
  • Plan, write and proofread a range of texts, including formal letters and emails
  • Take part in discussions and express your point of view with confidence

Class format and activities

You will work to develop your reading, writing and verbal communication skills. You will study topical subjects, and use the internet for research. You will work on your own and in groups, discussing and sharing ideas. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to the Level 1 Functional Skills English course.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English. You may have been born or raised in an English-speaking country but had a disrupted education. You need to have passed an Entry 3 Functional Skills English course. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study outside of class time.

You will need A4 lined paper, a ring binder folder, pen and a dictionary.

What you can do next

If you have excellent attendance and successfully complete the course, you may be advised to progress to English Level 1.
