What you will learn

This Fashion Portfolio Preparation Course will give you a chance to create a physical/hard copy body of work and provide an introduction to aspects of fashion studies, such as Visual research, experimentation, mood boards, sketchbooks, ideas development, drawing and presentation skills. You will learn to reflect on and critique your own work and that of others in a positive and constructive way. Suitable for those wanting to develop their creativity for fun, beginners who wish to start building a portfolio of work, as well as those wanting to build on prior experience in fashion (or art & design) to develop an exiting portfolio with a fashion focus for use in applications for further study, pitching your business idea or employment in the industry. You will leave the course with additional portfolio work and an insight into how to develop and edit your portfolio content further.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Identify the content of an effective portfolio
Begin to create content for a physical portfolio / hard copy body of work (e.g. sketchbook pages, mood boards, colour palettes.)
Research & develop a concept, demonstrating your personal style and creative ideas
Create work tailored to your chosen pathway

Class format and activities

Teaching is both to the whole class and on an individual, one-to-one basis using demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples, hand-outs and other technical support material where appropriate. You will receive feedback throughout your course to help you develop your skills. For you to be able to achieve on this practical class punctuality and attendance are key. Please inform your tutor of any absences. Microsoft Teams will be used for general class specific communication and for posting additional information. Health and safety inductions are planned into your course delivery, and you are asked not to use any machinery or specialist equipment until you have received specific training. Morley provides a positive and friendly atmosphere and to support this all students should be considerate and kind and work in a collegiate and collaborative way and to not monopolise the tutor.

Entry requirements

This is a mixed level course, all are welcome.

What you need to know before you enrol

Activities in class can involve standing at high tables for a period of time. Please let the tutor know if this would be difficult for you. The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Seear building and there is lift access to the first floor. Please note the eating and drinking is not allowed in the fashion studios - you are allowed to have bottled water. Students must be able to read, write and understand fluent English. Digital, mathematics and numeracy skills are desirable but not essential.

What you need

Equipment will be discussed in the first session:•A portfolio (types of portfolio will be discussed)•Fashion Magazines (a list will be supplied)•mechanical pencil, pencils, sharpener, eraser, ruler•Pritt stick, Blu tack.•A3 wire bound sketch book thick paper, A4 folder for handouts•colour media (e.g. coloured Inks /water colour/gouache & brushes, pastels, marker pens .NB: there is no need to buy in advance .This will be discussed in the 1st lesson)•notepad and pen•Propelling pencil HB•0.1 fibre tip technical drawing pen•0.5 fibre tip technical drawing pen•NB: Access to a printer:You will need to print out images of fashion and non-fashion images which are inspirational.
