What you will learn

Do faces fascinate you? Draw and paint from the model and learn to make portraits that are solid and realistic. Use knowledge of proportion, anatomical structure, tonal contrast and colour theory to improve your drawing and experiment with acrylic and/or oil painting.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • To know what to look for when drawing and painting portraits (visual analysis)
  • Use a variety of drawing and painting materials
  • To be able to make a portraits look solid and realistic
  • To be able to mix colours and skin tones
  • To refer to both the great masters and contemporary artists for inspiration

Class format and activities

This is a practical course and you will spend most of your time drawing and painting from the model and casts of the head. Your tutor will set different tasks for the class, as well as encouraging you to develop a personal style. There will be demonstrations and explanations of different approaches to portraiture. Tuition is given to the whole class and on an individual basis. You will also be encouraged to take part in discussions of artists' work and to learn from each other's different ways of working.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for people with some drawing & or painting experience. If you are a complete beginner, we recommend that you attend Drawing for beginners which will give you practice in gridding and measurement and analysing the proportions of the face.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course is taught in studio WD11 on the first floor above the Morley Gallery. There is no access to a lift.

What you need

Charcoal, soft pencils, erasers, a Sketchbook A5 or A4, drawing board clips and/or masking tape. Paper will be provided.
