What you will learn

Develop your own ideas, creativity and skills with introductions to a number of different sculpture media. Try plaster modelling and casting, working with wood, metal and clay. An open workshop for beginners and those with some experience. Extra support will be offered to those with no previous experience. Basic materials included. Materials charged for when use over the allocated materials fee.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Beginners: learn clay modelling, relief plaster casting and some armature construction techniques including spot welding as an introduction
  • All students: pursue personal project work in chosen media, (from clay modelling to metal construction), learning and improving skills and developing confidence
  • Learn and practice good workshop practice including Health and Safety in relation to self and other studio users.
  • Develop creative expression and aesthetic judgement in your own work through ongoing feedback from tutor and some group discussion.
  • Develop ideas and research your project work through sketchbooks/scrap books
  • Start to research contemporary sculpture practice going to exhibitions as discussed in class and own research

Class format and activities

You will be learning sculpture skills in various materials by working on you own projects with guidance from the tutor. You will learn through demonstration, practice, observation and discussion.

The course is suitable for beginner and intermediate sutdents with an interest in sculpture.
