What you will learn

This course is a general introduction to using a computer and is designed for those who have basic keyboard skills and need to gain confidence with using basic applications. You will learn the basics of using a computer, create documents using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications. Search the Internet for a variety of information, send and receive emails with attachment.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Follow safety and security practices when using a computer
  • Select suitable software to perform a task

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Essential Digital Skills (Entry 3) [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

Classes will be delivered in the classroom at the Waterloo site, typical activities will include: Whole group teaching, Group activities, Practical exercises, Demonstrations, 1-1 Support and guidance. Assessment methods will include ongoing formal/informal tutor assessment, self-assessment and a final exam. Teaching will be delivered using Microsoft Office 365 and other web based learning resources such as YouTube videos, online quizzes. It is essential that you have an email account. At the end of the course, students will be expected to sit a Functional Skills ICT exam at Entry Level 2.

Entry requirements

Required literacy/ ESOL Level is E2/E3. Some familiarity with using the keyboard, email and the Internet.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course runs once a week (three hours per lesson), students are expected to attend every lesson.• A minimum of 95% attendance and punctuality are required from all students.• This course requires some personal study time in addition to the completion of homework. It is important that students have access to a computer connected to the Internet outside of class in order to complete these activities.
